Welcome young scientists!

My name is Ponciano de la Torre. Mr. Zuchlewski, my assistant in the science laboratory, and I discuss what will help a young scientist like yourself be as succesful as possible. On this page you will find a collection of some of the finest advice a genius guinea pig and a zany science teacher can offer. Enjoy!

Tip / Consejo #99

"I always get a kick out of studying about the human body!"

Tip / Consejo #81

"Kids, I'm reporting today from the herb garden….the plants around me smell great….but why do they smell so great? To attract insects to POLLINATE the herbs so the herbs can make seeds and reproduce."

Tip / Consejo #21

"Here I am outside Ms. Guerra's room in a group of plants called ferns….ferns do NOT make flowers, but if you look under my leaves (called fronds) you will see SPORES….a type of seed that ferns make to reproduce."

Tip / Consejo #75

"Here I am surrounded by electrical parts which can all work together to make lights turn on or make buzzers sound. Every electrical circuit contains a power source (like the battery), wires to carry the electricity, and something to work on such as lights or buzzers. We can even have switches to turn electricity on or off.

Remember: Be careful when dealing with electricity! Check with your parents first!"

Tip / Consejo #55

"Here I am with 3 thermometers. The glass one is used to measure the temperature of liquids. The rectangular, metal one is used to measure the temperature outside. The round one is used to measure hot temperatures in an oven. Now that is some really cool information!"

Tip / Consejo #39

"Yum! I'm in a bed of lettuce and eating as much as I can! The bright green leaves here are not only tasty….they take in CARBON DIOXIDE from the air and sunlight and make sugar and extra OXYGEN that you breath in. Take a deep breathe and say "thanks" to a plant for the air you need to live."

Tip / Consejo #4

"Here I am eating an onion....the green tubes on top are really leaves that take sunlight and make food for the plant. "The white part below is called the bulb and stores up energy for the plant! In fact that bulb, as it gets bigger, can divide into many parts and reproduce without any seeds! Guinea pigs LOVE onions---roots, bulbs, and leaves!"

Tip / Consejo #64

"Hi everyone and Happy New Year! This week I am an astronaut and traveling into space on the space shuttle. When I am in space I weigh nothing! Why? Because there is no gravity in space."

Tip / Consejo #94

"Hi, I'm here at the North Pole with Santa Claus, discussing who is naughty and who is nice!. He tells me everything! The North Pole is a cold area, with no plants or animals or even land…it's all ice! Have a happy holiday!

Tip / Consejo #31

"This is me with a lab safety glove for The Simpson's... you will notice that there are only four fingers...but that is OK because all cartoon characters only have four fingers! Gloves are used to protect your hands against harsh chemicals. Be safe!"

Tip / Consejo #4

"Use a graduated cylinder to find the volume of irregular objects such as rocks. Graduated cylinders are also great tools for measuring liquids!"

Tip / Consejo #11

"I am here with a PENDULUM....pendulums swing back and forth showing the force of gravity pulling the pendulum down and the force of continued motion which pushing the pendulum up."

Tip / Consejo #38

"Use measuring spoons for measuring the VOLUME of small portions of liquid or dry substances and for stirring. Measuring spoons are often used at home for making recipes, such as a recipe for chocolate chip and hay cookies! (I just love hay in my chocolate chip cookies)."

Tip / Consejo #25

"Microscopes have glass pieces or lenses in them that let us see things too small for us to see normally. In fact we can see tiny micro-organisms and cells. Microscopes use REFRACTION to bend light to make small things appear bigger."

Tip / Consejo #5

"Magnets have two POLES or sides called the north pole and the south pole. When two north poles are together or when two south poles together they PUSH AWAY or REPULSE each other. When a north pole comes near a south pole they PULL TOGETHER or ATTRACT each other. Magnets also attract metals that contain iron or steel."

Tip / Consejo #14

"A tape measure should be used to measure irregular shaped objects." (Debe usarse una cinta métrica para medir objetos de forma irregular.)

Tip / Consejo #3

"Be careful when pouring mixtures: try not to spill anything and report all spills to the teacher."
