Wharton serves a predominately Hispanic population in the Fourth Ward
and Montrose area of Houston. Due to the economic redevelopment in the
neighborhood that began in 1999, Wharton has experienced a slight
change in demographics. Wharton is a Dual Language Magnet and accepts
space available transfers in several grades. Approximately 270
students have taken advantage of the magnet option during the
2006-2007 school year. The Dual Language program focused on
kindergarten in the first school year and continues moving up a grade
level each year. The initial group of students entering the Dual
Language Program is in the 6th grade for the 2006-2007 school year.
The demographic numbers have continued to shift with more students
choosing Wharton for the Dual language Program. The number of Hispanic
students is now approximately 75.8% while the Anglo population is
approximately 4.5% and the African American population has dropped to
17.8%. The Asian population is now .2% of the student population. The
percentage of students on free or reduced lunch has fallen to 75.7%.
Wharton is a school wide Title I program.
