Located in the Montrose area of Houston, Woodrow Wilson Elementary has
served Houston students since its construction in 1924. The school’s 433
students are housed in a two-story structure with 18 classrooms and an
additional 13 located in 7 temporary buildings. Student demographic are
described as 62% Hispanic, 10% African American, 23% White, and 5% other
(American Indian, and Asian), 61% economically disadvantaged, 36% LEP,
0% Migrant, and 8% Special Education. Wilson is a 100% Title I school.
Approximately 35% of students are classified as At-Risk of not
graduating from high school.
In February of 2005, HISD and Friends of Montessori (FOM) entered into
an agreement to create HISD’s first All-Montessori school. The FOM
agreed to provide all Montessori materials for Wilson Elementary. HISD
agreed to continue to fund according to standard state funding
provisions.
Junior Achievement provided by volunteers from American General
Financial Group. Wilson Elementary is dedicated to increasing parental
and community involvement. Specifically, this includes (a) parent
literacy and training classes, and (b) infiltrating the community to
identify and integrate resources and services from the community so as
to strengthen school programs, Montessori, Fine Arts, Bilingual, special
services, family practices, and student learning and development.
