Houston A+ Challenge - In 1999, The Annenberg Foundation, now Houston A+ Challenge recognized Wilson Elementary's efforts in school change , naming Wilson an Annenberg Lamplighter School and awarding a grant to continue implementation of reform initiatives. Wilson continues it's partnership the Houston A+ Challenge, as it focuses on creating a small, personalized learning community. These initiatives are monitored for successful patterns that can be replicated in other schools. The Annenberg Grant provided teachers with staff development opportunities designed to enhance and expand teacher repertoire of instructional strategies and reflective practices. Project Reconnect - A program to encourage parent involvement in schools. Classes are held on a regular basis for parents, both during the day and evening hours. These include finance, parent empowerment program, technology, language, exercise, crafts, etc. In addition, parent nights are held on a regular basis to help parents understand what is taking place with their child's education and the school. Texas Mentor Schools - The Texas Mentor School Network is a group of selected elementary schools across the state that have programs in place which can be shared with others. The benefit to Wilson Elementary focuses on the continued professional development growth opportunities for staff members. Community/School Partnerships - These partnerships have been a major factor in Wilson's success. In addition to financial contributions, volunteer tutors/mentors have been an asset to many individual students. American General /AIG assisted in refurbishing the school auditorium, creating school gardens, and provided Holiday gifts for our students. The Assistance League of Houston provides uniforms for students in need. St. Luke's Methodist Church has provided software for all student classrooms and construction of storage and display items. Martha Turner Properties has provided holiday gifts for students in need of support assistance as well. University of St. Thomas (UST) - University professors work with Wilson staff to address professional development needs. As pre-service teachers, UST education students conduct classroom observations at Wilson. |
