As the school counselor, my primary objective is to assist students in reaching their full potential to become effective learners.  My goal is to complement the learning environment in the classroom by using a child-centered, preventative, and developmental approach.

Counseling will be conducted with students individually and in small groups when requested by administrators, teachers, or parents and deemed necessary.  The service is short-term and confidential.  Parental permission is necessary prior to any extended individual counseling or group counseling.

Classroom guidance lessons will be offered monthly and will focus on academic, career, and personal/social development.  Topics for Pre-K through second grade will be:

bullet

Work habits and responsibilities

bullet

Identifying and expressing feelings

bullet

Understanding myself

bullet

Accepting and getting along with others

bullet

Making choices

bullet

Goal setting

Topics for third through fifth grade will be:

Goal setting

Consultation with parents and teachers is available to discuss problems that might be interfering with academic achievement and to plan strategies for successful learning.

Parenting programs in the form of brown-bag lunch seminars or afternoon and evening workshops will be offered throughout the year and will focus on a variety of parenting issues.  Topics may include managing stress, child safety, homework, communication, and middle school transition.  “Systematic Training for Effective Parenting” (STEP) classes will also be offered in the fall and spring semesters.  “Counselor’s Corner” will be a regular feature in the Cougar Prints.

Please call me at (281) 983 – 2800 or e-mail me at swicks@houstonisd.org with questions or if I can be of any service.
