Looking for a microscope?
Several parents asked for my recommendations and I looked at the web sites for Fry’s and Toys R Us. Although I can’t make any official recommendations, I can share some information with you. I did not see anything on the Fry web site I would buy as far as microscopes. I saw several possibilities on the Toys R us site. The problem is, you really can’t tell until you use it. If you have one that doesn’t work, the store may let you return it. The Ed Science microscope for $20 looks o.k. on paper. There was only one review, and it was negative. However, the write up seems like it would work just fine. However, as you know you get what you pay for. The next up was the Smithsonian 300 for $35. I could not tell if there was a light from the web site. Perhaps the box would give more information. The last one I looked at is pricey at $100, but looked very much like the compound microscopes we have at school. However, if you wanted to spend that much money, look up a company called Magiscopes. Sometimes they have an older model for about $100, new ones cost about $150 when I looked last year. This is a very easy microscope to use, and I love it. It is light, you can take it anywhere, even outside! You do not have to use a slide, can place any small object on the stage, and focusing is easy to do. I hope this helps.
