Special Projects
Cylinder Gardening
The
fourth grade Science classes plant a fall and spring garden using the
rectangular raised beds provided by the school. All produce harvested from
each gardener is theirs to take home for an evening meal. The purpose of
the garden is to give the students a hands-on experience with gardening.
The fourth grade science curriculum first unit of study is on plants and
animals.
Student Council
The Student
Council is made up of fourth and fifth grade students, 2 from each
classroom. These students are the ones who enjoy helping others. The
purpose of the Student Council is to become involved in the school, community,
and city. The students take a leadership role.
K.I.D.S. Club
The KIDS Club is the Drug-Free club. The sponsors of
the KIDS Club is Minerva Perez. The philosophy of the Drug-Free club is
one of zero tolerance for the use of alcohol by all persons under the age of 21
and the non-use of all illegal substance, as well as the non-use of legal
substances used illegally for all persons. This means abstinence is the
only message delivered to the students in our school. The students who
attend are encouraged to report back to their class lessons they learn in the
KIDS Club. The purpose of the J. P. Henderson KIDS Club is to have a
school based method of teaching drug education, build social skills and
reinforce appropriate behavior. Meetings are first and
third Wednesday of the month from 2:00 - 2:30p.m.
New Friend Program
Teachers and
staff "adopting" one at risk student. The purpose is
to provide extra support to our at risk students; be a friend and mentor.
Pep Squad and Cheerleaders
"Pep
Squad and Cheerleaders" is designed to help promote spirit at the
school. It also builds some of the girls self-esteem. Students
usually participate during Open House, Christmas Programs and other programs
throughout the year.
History Fair
The History
Fair is a competitive event in which individual students or groups of students
(2 - 5) can enter exhibits on any aspects of local, state, nation, or world
history, as well as any other social sciences. Students in grades 4 and 5
are eligible to enter. The History Fair provides students an opportunity
to do research, write paper, create projects, give performances, or produce
media presentations using the content and methods of the social sciences,
language, literature, and the arts. The student's imaginative exhibits and
corresponding research papers will make history come alive!
Spelling Bee
The Spelling
Bee was established to provide a forum to display student achievement in
spelling. The Spelling Bee will be open to 3rd - 5th graders. This
program encourages students to expand their knowledge in spelling skills.
National Honor Society
The National
Honor Society is the 4th and 5th grade students who have been at J.P. Henderson
since Kindergarten who 1) Have no more than 2 B's and the rest A's on
their final average and 2) Have all E's in conduct on their final average.
Wall of Fame
One student
from each grade level will be chosen each month. The program is designed
to recognize outstanding all around students.
Wonder Kid
Wonder Kid
program is designed to encourage good citizenship. Wonder Kid slips may be
given to any student by any teacher. Students fills them out and puts them
in "Wonder Kid" box in office. This program is designed to
reward good citizenship at J. P. Henderson.
Science Fair
The Science
Fair is open to all students, Pre-K - 5th grade who would like to do a
project. Pre-K - 2 are class project. 3rd grade can be team, group,
or individual. 4th and 5th grade projects will be individual or team.
