WOW!  What A Work (and Fun) Day!   On Sunday Afternoon Nov 5, 2006 All These Hard Workers Came Out to Help in Kolter's Pond And Garden. The Photographer apologizes for not capturing another example of Mrs. Roth and her daughters working away in the garden..
What a major positive impact they have on Kolter.
He also missed getting Mrs Hoyos and her Mom before they went off to trim vines near Mrs Hoyos' room.
Thanks  to everyone who came out or brought cardboard for mulching
or have ever worked in these endeavors.

Thanks From The Garden

Wow, what an awesome turnout the garden had this past Saturday August 26, 2006.  Even with the last minute notice, we had twenty volunteers from the Freshman class of Rice University and over twenty families from Kolter.  Mrs.Rapp and Mrs. Derakshan lent their much appreciated assistance as well.  There may have been a few sore bodies but they are balanced by some very happy hearts!  Great job on removing apple snails, weeds and moving mulch.  Our butterflies and tummies will soon be happier.  Students, talk to your teacher about what you'd like to grow in the garden.  Plantings will start in earnest after Labor Day.  Mrs. Derakshan's classes will be planting lettuce and carrots this Friday.  Our pizza topping bed is growing well.  Our sweet potatoes and black-eyed peas are doing great as well.  Check out the library for the books to give you ideas and have your teacher contact Mrs. Angela Roth for co-ordination.  Any parents who would like to help, leave a note in the green Garden box in the office, please.  Check out our school website next few weeks for the photos.

Congrats to the Gardens of Kolter for receiving the
"Keep Houston Beautiful Proud Partners Award"
                                  Fall 2005!

Kolter & Roosevelt Elementary Schools Named Mayor's Proud Partners

Kolter Elementary School Principal Brenda Keith poses with Keep Houston Beautiful Chairman Bill Linthicum (left) and Mayor Bill White.

Each year, Keep Houston Beautiful (in partnership with the City of Houston) recognizes individuals and organizations that help make Houston a cleaner and more beautiful place to live. Honorees receive one of three forms of commendation for their efforts in performing community service or beautification projects: a "Mayor's Proud Partner" award, a certificate of recognition, or an honorable mention designation. In 2005, two HISD schools were honored with Mayor's Proud Partner awards. Representatives from Kolter Elementary School and Roosevelt Elementary School accepted plaques commemorating their achievements from Mayor Bill White and Keep Houston Beautiful Chairman Bill Linthicum during the annual Proud Partners Luncheon, which was held this year on November 21.

Kolter Elementary School received the Mayor's Proud Partner award for its Garden Expansion Project, which took place in 2003 with the help of Urban Harvest. As part of the project, the school enlarged its outdoor learning gardens to include vegetable- and fruit-growing areas, and students have since planted and harvested two fall and two spring gardens of tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, and an assortment of herbs. Parents of Kolter students report that their children are now teaching them the skills that they have learned in the garden.
