Diabetes
This is a site created by fifth graders of River Oaks Elementary, Angela Chang, Coraima Ramirez, and Myles Dolliole. We created it for an I.B. project, Exhibition. We hope that our site will be useful to many people in the future. What Is
Diabetes?
Diabetes
is a disease in which blood glucose (sugar) levels are higher than normal.
This may be a result from lack of insulin (a hormone produced by the
pancreas) or inability to use insulin. The insulin produced is used to
remove sugar from the blood and break it down so that the body can use it
as energy. Over 12
million people in the United (Image
from www.training.seer.cancer.gov)States have
diabetes. 1
million of those are insulin-dependent, and 0.5 million people under 20
yrs. old have insulin- dependent diabetes. Eating
food raises blood glucose levels, while exercise lowers it. Some diabetics
take (inject) insulin to lower their blood sugar level. Diabetics need to
be extra careful when they are ill because illnesses can cause blood sugar
levels to raise because of the excessive other types of hormones
