Dear Parents,

Happy= New Year! It was great to see everyone yesterday -- back from the holidays and ready to begin the second half of the school year. With so many things on the calendar, it will go quickly!

Attac= hed to this week’s Greensheet is the official “school report card̶= 1; from the Texas Education Agency. All schools receive one each y= ear, and they are also available on-line at TEA. If you have questions, pl= ease email me and I will get an answer to you.

I wan= t to make sure everyone understands the testing calendar again. This= is also available on-line at Houstonisd.org . Stanford10 testing for all grades (kinder through five) will take place next week. Students will take a practice test this Friday, and begin testing on Monday morning. Tests will= take place each morning after arrival – be sure to be on time next week, a= nd help your child(ren) get a good night’s sleep and a good breakfast! TAKS testing will not be held until early March.&nbs= p; We will have more information as it gets closer.

We hoped that the holidays would be the end of = the head lice problem we have been experiencing, but it appears that it has not been. I have asked Nurse Petner to be vigilant about classroom checks and am providing her with some additional help in the clinic so that= she can do so. Any student found with active lice or with nits must= be sent home according to district policy. They may return after b= eing checked by the nurse. I know this is not a fun experience for any fam= ily, but we need to get the problem in check and will be very strict so that we = can get it taken care of. We greatly appreciate your help with the situation.

I wan= t to thank you for your patience in parking for the holiday events on 12/20. As expected, police officers were called to both the cir= cle drive and Avalon. I’m sure the visible police cruisers we= re a deterrent, but no persons were cited for parking in the fire lane. Remember (as posted by the city), the fine for this is $1000. We did have one car “noted” for parking by the trash bins. O= nly our substitute custodial and HISD maintenance/delivery vehicles are permitt= ed there during school hours. I asked that that they not be ticketed unt= il after I put this information into the Greensheet. Only one tick= et was issued on Avalon that I am aware of. I was relieved that it went = so smoothly – thank you!

Help with TAKS Reading

Central Region Office will be hosting a session entitled “How to Help at Home with TAKS Reading” on January 18^th as part of their Family Fridays. Mentors Needed for Exhibition

The 5^th graders need YOU! Exhi= bition is the 5^th grade IBPYP culminating project that will take place = in May. The project is worked on for the entire spring semester and we a= re in need of mentors to meet with a small group of students to cheer them on during this very challenging time. We are accepting ALL parents, frie= nds or community members, including parents of 5^th grade students.&n= bsp; No experience necessary, just come ready to encourage and support! After School Program

The after school classes are well underway. If you are trying out classes, the= final date for add/drop is January 18^th. Stop by the ASP office to see what= is still available. Next two pay= ments are due on February 1^st and March 7^th.
