Dear Parents,

The action-filled days continue! I hope that yo= u are enjoying some of the fun events taking place. Yesterday’s Living History Museum in 2^{nd<=
/sup>
grade was amazing as always. On Friday Ms. Hicks and company presented their
annual performance and I’ve heard it was a lot of fun, with costumes,
etc. That day I accompanied several campus and district administrators to a=
n IB
meeting in Dallas.
The Director General of IB from Geneva,
Switzerland
came to share the future pathway of IB and invite persons to give input. Two
other speakers represented IB North America. In the speech, Lamar was one of
six high schools mentioned. Wonderfully, River Oaks was then singled out and
specifically talked about—the only elementary school mentioned. It wa=
s a
very proud moment and so great that other district personnel were able to h=
ear
the comments. Our staff is amazing! J}

On Saturday, after checking out our display of = Art at the Central Region Expo, I attended the annual HISD Librarian’s Lunch= eon. We were thrilled to hear the announcement that Elizabeth Eastman has been chosen Librarian of the Year for Houston ISD!! Elizabeth is very strong, highly respec= ted by her peers, and really deserves the award. She will be recognized by the boa= rd next fall and will spend the next year holding this honor. Another very pro= ud moment! J

The week continues with a choir concert tomorrow morning, the fifth grade field trip to Buckhorn Ranch on Thursday, and Friday’s OM dance after school. Tu= esday of next week is our annual “Switch Day.” If you are new, know t= hat this is a short but fun time for all of our students to spend about 30 minu= tes visiting a classroom of the grade level for next year. It will be an exciti= ng time for everyone!

Dancing With the ROE Stars!

Let’s celebrate the end of the school year together and show off our dance moves in the ROE cafeteria on Friday, May 2= 3rd from 3:15 – 4:15! The cost is $3.00 and proceeds will be used to help= our Odyssey of the Mind teams travel to Maryland to represent ROE and the Great State of Texas at the World Finals later this month. Let’s have a great time and help support our teams!

Calling all Shutter Bugs & Graphic Artists<= /p>

We are looking for 3–4 parents to take th= e lead on the Yearbook Staff. This team will lead the effort to gather photos, tex= t, and other content for the yearbook, coordinate volunteers to take pictures = at School-wide events, determine page layouts and develop pages, as well as promote the sale of the yearbook and coordinate distribution upon completio= n.

The breakout of the Yearbook staff positions in= volves anywhere between 20–50 hours of volunteer time. A Very Special Thank You!

Last Thursday, the fifth graders had the culmin= ation of their experiences in the PYP at River Oaks come to fruition at Exhibitio= n. We hope that all of you had a chance to see the exhibition projects and hear the incredible depth of learning that took place this year. Exhibition is a long and difficult process, and there is no way our students could have achieved the level of understanding without the help of some very important people. We would like to thank all of the adults that volunteered to mentor these students through the process. Each mentor committed one hour a week f= rom February–May! Their dedication to our students and their commitment to inquiry and understanding helped to make this year’s exhibition the b= est yet! Thank you so much for your help, and we hope you will consider mentori= ng next year!

The Auction Team Needs You!!

School is out in just six days and summer will = fly by, so it is time for us to get a head start organizing the committees for = our Fall Frenzy Auction Party that will be held on Friday, November 14, 2008. B= elow is a brief outline of the Auction Committees we are recruiting for. We are looking to fill both leadership and committee member positions in these are= as.

Auction Acquisitions Committee – t= his team will focus on activities such as soliciting donations for the Silent Auction and Live Auction, determining Games/Raffle concepts, data input into the Auction Software, solicitation of Underwriters and the Auction Catalogue creation, production and distribution.

Auction Publicity/Ticket Sales Committee – this team will be responsible for creating a buzz about the event, Ticket Sales, creation of Bidder Packets and the Check-In process at the Auction event.

Auction Venue Committee – this gro= up will be responsible for tasks such as determining event Layout and Setup, fulfilling Equipment Rental needs, creation and setup of Decorations, determination of the Food and Beverage menu, booking the Entertainment, as = well as event Setup and Breakdown at the venue.

Auction Fulfillment Committee – th= is team will handle the Checkout function at the Auction event and the closeout tasks that follow in the few weeks following event
night. Tasks include mailing Receipts and Award Certificates, sending out T= ax Letters, sending out Thank You notes, handling post-event Issue Resolution = and creating/distributing Final Reports.

Please contact us if anything looks interesting and we will hook you up with other parent volunteers to work on a certain area within a committee. Thanks for your support of this exciting Fundraising event.
