PTO NEWS
8/21/03

Dear Parents,

The River Oaks Elementary PTO has a very active year planned. And as a result of your feedback last year, we’re trying some new things. For instance, proceeds of the Sally Foster campaign this year will be used to defray the cost of computers and printers in classrooms and the computer lab. The Book Fair Family Day will be held in conjunction with the Fun Run on Saturday November 1. The complete calendar of fun and fundraising events is as follows:

Sally Foster Campaign Kick-Off (Chair: Renee Bowling)      Fri. Aug. 22

PTO General Meeting                                                             Mon. Oct. 20

Book Fair (Chairs: Janet Horn Treat and Jessica Pugil)        Mon. Oct. 27-Mon. Nov. 3

Fun Run & Book Fair Family Day                                           Sat. Nov. 1

Auction (Chair: Catherine Nelson)                                          Sat. Jan. 31

PTO General Meeting                                                             Tues. Mar. 30

75th Anniversary Celebration (Chair: Maureen Beck)        Fri. Apr. 2-Sun. Apr. 4

Carnival (Chair: Valerie McNeel)                                             Sat. Apr. 3

Through these events and other PTO activities, we’re working hard to improve communications with you, continue supporting our children’s education and provide opportunities to strengthen the sense of community at River Oaks Elementary.

This is a pivotal year for ROE for two reasons. First, we’ll be planning for a major renovation. In addition, throughout the year, we’ll commemorate the 75th anniversary of our school. This milestone gives us an opportunity to reach out to our alumni, local businesses and neighbors to support ROE and ensure that the school renovation results in a premier facility for our children. The formal celebration of the 75th anniversary will be Friday Apr. 2 through Sunday Apr. 4.

I hope you’ll join us for as many of these events as possible, and that you’ll consider sharing your talents with the PTO. Check the volunteer section of this website to find out about our volunteer needs. We make it easy for you to choose an activity that fits your interests and time constraints. The advantages our children have as ROE students result in large part from your contribution of time and resources.

On behalf of the PTO, thank you for your continued commitment to ROE students, faculty and staff.

Best regards,
Karin Knapp

Ways & Means

Chair: Cynthia Hobbs

Auction: Marcela Chennisi

This event is one of PTO's major fund raisers. In the past, the auction and the carnival were combined as a single event and $36,000 was raised from this event last year. 2001-2002 is the first year when these two events have been split and the auction was held in the evening off- campus at the Amazon Grill at the Pavilion on Post Oak Blvd. with hors d'oeuvres and child-care provided. Business sponsors and parents donate a wide range of items for auction including theater tickets, store gift certificates, restaurant gift certificates, museum memberships, vacations, photography sessions and one-of-a-kind items created by parent-student class groups.

Book Fair: Janet Horn

The book fair is a fund-raising event for enhancements to the school library. Traditionally the event is in the fall (around Halloween) and usually lasts 4 1/2 school days. Several special events take place within this period.

Grandparents Day is held in the library and is aimed at invitees who might not otherwise be able to attend the book fair. These people include but are not limited to grandparents, other relatives, neighbors and special friends of the family. Invitations are sent home and signed by the parent to grant permission for the child to attend the book fair with their special invitee. Refreshments that appeal to all ages; cookies, pastries, juice and coffee are provided to make this a special occasion.

Teachers bring their students to preview the books during Kid Preview. Students are provided a wish list upon which they are to write down the titles of the books they want their parents to buy during Family Night.

Family Night is the big event when the book fair moves from the library to the cafeteria. It is from 5 - 8 p.m. with food being served from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. Contest winners are announced, door prizes are awarded, there is a costume parade and plenty of time for shopping. We have had authors speak/interact with the kids, a strolling magician and an Olympic athlete, depending on the theme for the evening.

Fun Run & Carnival: Jessica Pugil & Morgan Moody

The Fun Run & Carnival is held in the fall and is an enjoyable event for ROE students and their families. Students, teachers and family members can participate in different races, wearing t-shirts designed by a student. In addition, there are moon walks, mini-train rides and numerous amusement park style booths sponsored by different classes from all grades. The children enjoy the variety of amusements as well as medals and prizes from the different races.

ROE Shirts:  Louise Wong

Students, parents and ROE staff can purchase polo shirts and sweatshirts with the ROE logo. Each year, a contest is held for a winning tee-shirt design from the students. This design is made into the following year's ROE Spirit tee-shirt which students are encouraged to wear on Fridays. A small portion of the purchase price for all shirts go towards PTO causes.

You can download a shirt order form here.

School Supplies: Sally Jacobe

The selling of school supplies is a service provided by the PTO in an effort to take the hassle out of shopping. These supplies are sold at cost. If parents order the supplies before school starts, the supplies are delivered to the child's classroom before the first day of school. Parents are encouraged to order supplies from the school so (1) the students have their supplies on the first day like everyone else and (2) everyone will have the supplies (brand, quantity) that were selected by the teachers.

Volunteers

Co chairs: Tonja Deviney and Julie Lane

Administrative/Office Support: Julie Lane

Field Day: Sherri Rogers

Library Support: Sally Jacobe

This person works closely with the Librarian, Sally Fox, on library related projects. This person is responsible for recruiting parent volunteers (Library Support Team) with the abilities needed to complete the particular projects and then providing the necessary support to see the projects to completion. Current projects include shelving current and new books, bar-coding books, and making the library environment more child friendly.

Mentors/Tutors: Dolores Bustamante (teacher)

Nature Center: Carolyn White

Carolyn works with Amy Rose, our science teacher on projects for the Nature Center.  See Nature Center.

Odyssey of the Mind (OM): Carolyn Caplan or Barbara Ostdiek

Carolyn and Barbara work with the Vanguard Coordinator on the Odyssey of the Mind program for ROE. OM fosters creative thinking and problem-solving skills among participating ROE students from second through fifth grade. Students form teams of up to seven members and solve problems in a variety of areas, from interpreting literary classics to building structures out of balsa wood. Parent volunteers generally coach the teams. OM is an ROE tradition and there is about ten to twelve teams who participate annually. Teams compete at school, regional, state and international levels. Parent volunteers organize information and practice sessions to help new teams along the learning curve. Participation in OM enables students to learn how to work as a team, evaluate ideas, make decisions and create solutions without outside assistance. For more information on OM, go to www.odysseyofthemind.org.

Sally Foster Gift Wrap Fund Raiser: Chris Powers

This is a popular and important fund raiser for our school. Students raise money by selling items from the Sally Foster catalog. Typically, items include gift wrap, chocolate, stationery and other accessories.

ROE Yearbook: Cathy Foreman

The Yearbook is a commemorative publication that contains photos and articles that document the people and activities that made up our school year.

Other PTO Activities

Box Tops for Education: Tim Conrad

Students are encouraged to save box tops from General Mills products which can be redeemed for cash. Place the box tops in the BOX TOPS box in the cafeteria. In addition, register and shop online at www.boxtops4education.com and a portion of your qualifying purchases will be donated to ROE. You will not be paying any extra and you will be shopping at well known stores like Barnes & Noble, Eddie Bauer, Amazon.com, Lands' End, Dell etc. A third way to raise money with Box Tops is to apply for a Box Tops Visa card by calling 1-800-227-9605. Designate ROE as the school to receive 1% of your car purchase price.

Donations from Partner Stores You Patronize

Several stores will donate a portion of your purchases to ROE if you designate it as your beneficiary. Currently, we receive about $100 a month from these programs. This money goes directly to the school budget and not to the PTO. Assuming the typical family spend $100 per week on food and there are about 500+ families, ROE could be getting over $2,000 per month to support and enhance our children's education. All this and you do not have to pay any extra for your purchases!

Randalls – Obtain a Remarkable card (like a frequent buyer card) from Randalls and designate ROE as a beneficiary of their Good Neighbor Program (you can designate up to three beneficiaries) and ROE will receive 1% of your purchases. The GNP Charity # for ROE is 5730. If you are already a Remarkable card holder, you can add ROE as a beneficiary.

Kroger – Use the Kroger Share card each time you make a purchase. ROE gets 1% of the amount of your purchases. You can get extra Kroger Share card from Ways & Means Chair or school office.

Central Market – Use the Central Market card when you shop there and ROE gets 5% of your purchases. Extra Central Market cards can be obtained from Ways & Means Chair.

K-Mart – Fill out a form at K-Mart and you will get a card to use that will allow ROE to get a credit from your purchases.

Target – If you have a Target credit card and designate ROE as a beneficiary, ROE will receive up to 5% of the total of your purchases.
