About Our Library

Collection

The Scroggins Library is fully automated and houses nearly 7,000 books, 20 periodicals, and about 500 non-print items including videos and computer software.  In January 2006, thanks to the Rebuild HISD program, we opened a brand new expanded facility that includes shelving for a much larger library collection and space for 12 student computer workstations.

Staff

The Scroggins librarian is Jo-Anne Reed.

Library Automation

The Scroggins Library has been fully automated since the 1994-95 school year. Since the 2000-2001 school year, HISD libraries have been using a district-wide library information management system called Alexandria. This automation system allows all HISD libraries to share resources through an inter-library loan program. The new system also allows students, teachers, and parents to search the district's libraries from their classrooms and from home. In fact, the library's collection can be searched from any computer on the Internet. The Scroggins library was one of the first HISD elementary school libraries to receive this new system and remains a trial site for new versions and/or additions to the program.

Internet

Internet access in each HISD school is provided by the district as part of its WAN (Wide Area Network). The Scroggins Library has several workstations with Internet access. They are used for the library OPAC (Online Patron Access Catalog.) The library student workstations are also available for teachers who bring or send students to the library with specific assignments. Students must have permission from their parents to use the Internet.  These Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) Internet permission forms are kept of file in the school office.
