Ms. Paola Daniels - Principal
Hurricane Ike caused considerable disruption to the academic program in each of our schools. In realizing that there is not an easy solution to making up the missed instructional time for our students, the HISD Board of Education has authorized the district to submit a waiver for all the missed instructional days caused by Hurricane Ike. Therefore any designated school holiday will not be used to make up the instructional time.
In order to make up for the loss of instructional time, each campus has created a plan with the assistance of the Site-Based Decision Making Committee to maximize student learning. There is no specific number of days or hours that will need to be made up, but all schools should strive to ensure that core instruction is made up for all students.
The following are the actions taken at Tijerina to support student learning:
Cutting back on school field trips/school-wide programs/ assemblies/guest speakers. Any guest speakers or presentations will be scheduled during the ancillary block;
• Revising lesson plans/whole school curriculum programs. We prioritized the power objectives and integrated objectives across the content areas;
• Adding tutorial programs during the school day for those students needing additional assistance. Each grade level has an additional 30 minute block for math and reading intervention respectively.If you have any questions regarding our plan, please schedule an appointment with me by calling Irma Torres at 713-924- 1791.
