Developmental Bilingual Program
The Developmental Bilingual Program (DBP) model is a Bilingual
Program model whereby English language learner students are provided the opportunity to fully develop and
maintain their native language in the early grades (PK-3). English
instruction increases gradually throughout the elementary grades until
reaching a level of proficiency in both languages that leads to a 50%
native language curriculum and 50% English curriculum at grades 4 and 5.
This program is also known as Developmental Maintenance.
Goals of the One-Way Developmental Bilingual Program (DBP)
The goals of this program are for students to:
•Attain fluency in communication and literacy in English and Spanish.
•Attain high levels of academic achievement in all subject areas in
both languages
•Develop positive cross-cultural attitudes and behaviors
