Woodrow Wilson Elementary School was named after the 28th president of the United States. This former president was born on December 29, 1856 in Staunton, Virginia. He was a lawyer, a university president, and a governor of New Jersey before being elected to the highest office of the land. He served as president from 1913 to 1921, years that encompassed the First World War. After the war, President Wilson worked to establish the League of Nations. He suffered a great disappointment when the United States did not join the organization. President Wilson died in Washington, D.C. on February 3, 1924. Wilson Elementary School was built in 1924 on the site of the summer
farm home of Mirabeau Buonaparte Lamar, the president of the Republic of Texas
from 1838 to 1841. Mirabeau B. Lamar was sworn into office on December
10, 1838 as the second and last president of the Republic of Texas. For more

The acreage site, Oak Grove, was
subdivided in 1923. Ground was broken for the school in 1924 with the
Mayor and many of the important dignitaries of the city present. In
1925, Wilson School opened and became the showplace school of the city
for many years.
 Woodrow Wilson school has the distinction of being built on the
location of the home of Mirabeau Lamar, and being named after the
28th President, Woodrow Wilson. These two distinctive, great leaders
were similar in many respects. They were great in mind and spirit,
vision and courage and in their devotion to their country--its
struggles and its pains. They were men of immense intelligence and
energy, and they made public life their career.

Wilson's most famous alumni are journalist Walter Cronkite and former
Governor of Texas, Mark White.
